SPIDERTRACKS AIRCRAFT TRACKING | HOW IT WORKS • GPS coordinates received by spider device and transmitted at intervals selected by operator. • Beamed to Iridium network of 66 orbiting satellites. • Translated into visual record of the journey, viewable in real –time. Leaves a bread crumb trail, laid over topographical maps, and permanent record of the tracks. • Tracks and data accessed by multiple authorised users, anytime, from anywhere in the world via the Internet.

SPIDERTRACKS| KEYPAD • Pilots can communicate up to four simple messages via satellite to the operations base, such as “Ops Normal” etc. • The monitor button enables pilot to tell the system to ‘actively track’ the flight. Text and email alerts are generated by the website if it loses contact with the aircraft. • ‘The alert button sends emergency texts and emails in the event of an accident. • The radius button suspends transmission of position points while working safely in a set area.

WHO’S WATCHING OUT FOR YOU? • There were 82 aircraft crashes in NZ between 1999 and 2008 involving injury or death (CAA and TAIC database). • Total aircraft carrying ELTs 73 • Total number of successful ELT operation 10 • ELT failure rate 86% • Of the 63 that failed to operate, 34 had clear reasons for failure: • Fire 11 32% • Aircraft sank 7 21% • Impact Damage 6 18% • Aerial damage 6 18% • Aircraft breakup midair 4 12% • Includes 121.5MHz beacons but 406s will fail for the same reasons.

11. WHO’S WATCHING OUT FOR YOU? • With a flight plan, searches are initiated only after SARtime is exceeded. This could be hours after the incident occurred. • Locating the aircraft is based on a ‘guess-timate’ of where you are. Your route often changes during flight. • The ERCEG Crash, 2005 – took nine days and reputedly up to $8million to find - $2.4million of tax payer dollars. • Had a ELT on board but the aerial broke so it did not transmit. • The search area was very large. • Not knowing where a lost aircraft is costly, wastes precious time and worst, could be deadly.

THE SOLUTIONI AUTOMATIC ACTIVE TRACKING • Tracking systems are generally passive – they record the aircraft’s tracks, provide location data. • Spidertracks pioneered ‘active tracking’ in 2007 with its monitoring function. Pilots can ‘tell’ the system to watch over their flight. If the system loses contact with the aircraft, SMS and email alerts are automatically sent to pilot’s contacts. • Contacts take action to find the pilot and/or contact rescue services. • Spiderwatch takes active tracking to a new level.
