Important People on the Expedition • Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) The Captain of the Expedition • William Clark (1770-1838) The Co-Captain of the Expedition • Sacagawea (1790-1812) An interpreter as well as a peace token to Native American Indian Tribes • Toussaint Charbonneau (1759- 1839) The Main Interpreter for the Expedition • Jean Baptiste Charbonneau “Pompey” (1805-1866) The child of Sacagawea, born during the expedition
Important People Continued • Sergeant Charles Floyd (1787-1804) First soldier to die beyond the Mississippi River • President Madison (1751-1836) Secretary while Jefferson was President that oversaw the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Louisiana Purchase, and Barbery Wars. • Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) President of the United States that organized the Lewis and Clark Expedition as well as the Louisiana Purcase
Preparing for the Expedition • June 18th 1803 Jefferson sent a secret letter asking for 2,500 dollars to explore the west to reach the Pacific • Jefferson chose his former secretary Lewis and told him to pick a co captain. • Lewis chose Clark a man he had known in his military days • In order to gain a crew Lewis and Clark went to Camp Dubois on the east side of the Mississippi River to recruit
The Expedition • The Expedition ranged from 1804-1806 • Explored from Mississippi River to Washington • Route: Started from Missouri going through Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Finally Washington • November 15th, 1805 reached Pacific • After weather tamed down they started there return voyage in the Spring • Returned home 1806
After The Expedition • Journals were published and settlements began to spring up along the west • Conflicts however began between the Native Americans and the whites • Land Boundaries started to become an issue between the English, Spanish, and Americans beginning a war • In all the expansion created an idea of manifest destiny • Manifest Destiny = The idea that the U.S. would spread across land from the Atlantic to Pacific
