P105: Spiritually formed by narratives • Three levels of Narratives and Histories: • Top Level = The eternal, universal plan of God • Middle Level = The story of God’s people • Lowest Level = The stories of individuals • God is the Hero • Mistake 1: we look at individuals as models • Mistake 2: we overpersonalize Old Testament narratives (example: Gideon)

P105: Spiritually formed by narratives • Three levels of Narratives and Histories: • Top Level = The eternal, universal plan of God • Middle Level = The story of God’s people • Lowest Level = The stories of individuals • God is the Hero • Mistake 1: we look at individuals as models • Mistake 2: we overpersonalize Old Testament narratives (example: Gideon)

  18. P109: Spiritually formed by narratives cont. • Best to take Big Bites • We should emphasize the broader sweeps, the larger chunks of the narrative, rather than looking primarily at individual units: e.g. Judges (sin cycle) • Error 1: allegorizing • Error 2: moralizing or principlizing

  19. 2 main questions to ask when reading OT narrative • Primary: What does this passage tell us about God, His plan, or the role that his people should be playing in his plan? • Secondary: What positive or negative model might this passage be setting before us to teach us about trusting God in the midst of His plan?

In partners: Pick a passage and ask the 2 main questions • Passage Selections • 2 Kings 6:1-7 – A Floating Axehead • Numbers 21:4-9 – Bronze Snake • Judges 3:12-30 – Ehud the Judge • Joshua 10:1-15 – The Sun Stands Still • Genesis 29:16-30 – Jacob Marries Leah, and Rachel • Primary: What does this passage tell us about God, His plan, or the role that his people should be playing in his plan? • Secondary: What positive or negative model might this passage be setting before us to teach us about trusting God in the midst of His plan?
