A new threat to aviation safety in the UK has surfaced recently and it has nothing to do with poor weather conditions or terrorists. According to a high-ranking aviation safety consultant, the problem will stem from the shortage of engineers and other skilled workers. Top aviation consulting firms further mention that this does not mean that military aviation is unsafe. As a matter of fact, Garwood reported a record low in accident rates during the past 12 months. One thing it implies though, is that some issues like routine air worthiness are not addressed. This problem is not news to a lot of people. In fact, this problem has been quite known within the MAA circles for the past 4 years. Imminent Problems in UK Aviation Safety Due to Lack of Engineers
The shortages, particularly of engineers and others at the Defense Equipment & Support (DE&S) arm of the Defense Ministry, is not an isolated issue affecting only military aviation safety. A good number of steps have been taken by the MAA recently including offering 102 program and project management posts along with 70 engineering and science posts. Other steps include setting up recruitment campaign initiatives. The most recent one netted them 32 new recruits. Imminent Problems in UK Aviation Safety Due to Lack of Engineers
Albeit previous rumors regarding salary problems, the DE&S has implemented new salary freedoms that will job offers from the MAA quite competitive in the job market. Finding sufficient recruits for the British Army and its expanding reserve forces is likely the biggest worry for the Defense Board, but attracting and retaining engineers, technicians and others to operate and support the military's increasingly exotic equipment is also a major headache. It is also to note that it is not only the military aviation group that is worried. Even industry aviation groups are expressing concerns with aircraft reliability because of the lack of skilled workers. We will certainly see the military and industry fighting over this relatively small pool of skilled workers soon. No matter what angle you look at it, it’s a very grim scenario.
