Who in here wants to fly on cold weather on a plane with no cold weather safety equipment? Really? No takers? Well, aviation safety experts from a company in Minnesota thinks so too. Tanis Aircraft Products from Blaine, Minnesota created a bounty program this spring to make air travel safer for the coming fall and winter seasons. • The bounty program works this way: A & P technicians stationed in the Northern United States or Canada can “turn in” aircraft brought in for maintenance that does not have a preheat system installed. The technician will then get a $5 coffee credit at Starbucks, Tim Horton’s, or Dunkin Donuts. • No worries though, nobody is going to jail for this. Well, not through the program. The owner of the aircraft will then be given information on cold weather flying and the importance of proper aircraft engine preheat equipment. President and CEO of Tanis, Doug Evink, tells us more about the program. According to him, “The Bounty Program is meant to raise awareness of the hazards of flying in cold climates without proper equipment. Mechanics and MRO centers are our partners in this endeavor because they are in the best position to advise the aircraft owners about their unique situation. If an aircraft owner decides a preheat system is right for them, it’s convenient to install a preheat system while their aircraft is already in the shop.” • Tanis not only focuses on finding out who has no cold weather safety equipment as they are one of the leading aviation safety experts for cold weather flying. They also provide information and guidance on appropriate systems for specific aircraft. Tanis also provides a weekly Cold Weather Tips information series. This series runs from September through March and it includes tips on certain topics such as appropriate survival equipment to carry on planes, how to protect auxiliary equipment, and how to take off and land on snowy and/or icy conditions. If you are still wondering what an improperly heated aircraft flying on cold weather can face, here are some of the more common problems they can encounter. • Aircraft without proper preheating equipment can develop engine problems. This is due to the cold weather stressing out the different parts of the engine. • Improper preheat solutions only heat a certain part of the engine and that is not enough most of the time. This can sometimes cause more harm than good for your engine. • Cold weather starts requires long run-ups that means extra fuel usage. This is very costly for operators and is a problem form EMS and other emergency response aircraft. • Aside from Tanis, there are also other companies out there that are more than willing to help out entrepreneurs and operators.
