  1. Paul: Snapshots of a Life Biographical tidbits from the Acts of the Apostles and Paul’s Letters

  2. Paul: Snapshots of a Life • Acts of the Apostles • Contains the only sustained stories of Paul • Treated as “secondary” compared to biographical components that can be gleaned from undisputed letters • In fact, most reconstructions of Paul will use the material in Acts to create a “timeline” for Paul. • Hard to be certain how good the sources for Acts are • Some believe the author to have been some time companion of Paul himself based on 1st person narration (“we” passages) in places (Acts 16:10-16; 20:5-21:18; 27:1-28:16) • Other scholars are content that author of Acts had first person travelogue of one of Paul’s companions • Still other scholars argue this is mere literary convention for travelogues. • Scholars are somewhat split on how well Acts represents Paul’s teachings in its speeches and note apparent discrepancies with Galatians to call Acts into question

  3. Paul: Snapshots of a Life • Galatians 1:11-2:14 • The key source for Pauline biography • Undisputed letter of Paul and contains aspects of his life in his own words • …but, keep in mind this is self-representation—this is not “objective fact” but autobiography as a way of setting up a highly rhetorical argument! • Some Other Sources in Paul’s Letters • Some larger sections which give some insight into Paul include 2 Corinthians 10-13 (esp. 11:23-33), Philippians 3:4-6 • There are also hints at companions and travel plans in snippets, e.g., 2 Cor 1:15-2:4; Rom 15:19, 22-32; Phil 2:19-29; 1 Thes 2:1-2, 3:1-13.

  8. Paul: Snapshots of a Life • We will look at a sampling of what limited materials are available to us in order to get at Paul’s life • Acts 9—Paul’s “conversion” • Acts 13-14—Paul “on tour” with Barnabas • Acts 15—“The Jerusalem Council” • Acts 16—Paul “on the road again” • Acts 21-22—Arrest in Jerusalem • Acts 27-28—Shipwrecked en route to Rome to face trail • Galatians 1:11-2:14—Paul’s “autobiography” • 2 Corinthians 11:22-12:4—Paul’s self-perception
