How we rely on the environment. Essential Questions • What are natural resources? • What is the difference between renewable and nonrenewable natural resources? • What are the three major categories of environmental problems?
Natural Resources An introduction
Two Types of Resources • Natural Resources - occur in the air, water and on land • Human Resources - labor, skills, machinery and money
Natural Resources • “features of the environment which are needed and used by people.” • Have… • Ecological value • Economic value • Recreational value • Educational value • Aesthetic value
Non-Renewable Resources • Are said to be non-sustainable as their use will eventually lead to their exhaustion (i.e. they will run out) • Occur in limited quantity. • Do not regenerate in a “human lifespan” timeframe.
Fossil Fuels – Coal, Oil, Natural Gas • Are non-renewable resources created from organic matter (i.e. dead organisms) over millions of years • Used to produce energy. • Quickest and easiest way of generating vast amounts of energy.
Did you know… • 1 modern ‘fossil fuel’ power station produces the same amount of energy as: 300 wind turbines 150 km2 of solar panels 100 kms of powerful coastal wave energy
Future Reserves of Fossil Fuels • Oil 40-45 years • Natural Gas 50-65 years • Coal 200-300 years
Minerals • A naturally occurring, inorganic solid that has a definite chemical composition. • Many of these are generally not destroyed in use and can be recycled. eg. Iron, Copper, Zinc, Tin, Gold
Renewable resources • Continuous - a “flow of nature” - being continuous, they can be used over and over again e.g. wind, water. • Sustainable- they are renewable and self- generating if left to nature e.g. trees, fish. • However, if renewable resources are overused their existence may be threatened.
What kind of resource is/are… • Sand • Natural gas • Salt • Lobsters • River water • Sugar cane • Granite Non-renewable - Mineral Non-renewable – Fossil Fuel Non-renewable - Mineral Renewable - Sustainable Renewable - Continuous Renewable - Sustainable Non-renewable - Mineral
Today’s Tasks: • Vocabulary Development: complete a vocabulary organizer for each term. • Use color pencils for pictures. • 10 examples needed. • 10 adjective descriptors needed. • Terms • Natural Resources • Pollution • Resource Depletion • Loss of Biodiversity
