History • As the personal computer became feasible in the early 1970s, the idea of a portable personal computer followed. A "personal, portable information manipulator" was imagined by Alan Kay at Xerox PARC in 1968, and described in his 1972 paper as the "Dynabook".
Classification • Laptops are divided into five classes-: • Desktop Replacement • Subnotebook • Net book/ Note Book • Rugged Laptop • Tablet Laptop
Advantages • It is portable which means you can carry it anytime and anywhere you want. • It is light weight and small in size. • All it’s components are in one piece. • Wi-Fi in laptops can work almost anywhere in the world. • A laptop is meant for personal use which means all your secret data is only accessible by the owner. • A laptop takes up much less space than a desktop. • A laptop uses much less battery than a desktop. • It has a long battery life. • It only requires a charger to charge. • It does not produce as much heat or sound as much as a desktop does.
Disadvantages The price is higher than PC’s even after similar level of performances. It has been proven, that the keyboards in a laptop cause serious wrist injuries. Also the posture while using a laptop leads to spine or neck injuries. The upgrading of a laptop can be only done up to some extend which is not good enough now days. Barely three or four external devices can be attached to a laptop. A university in New York has discovered that laptops effect the reproductive system in males. The laptops are at a higher risk of being stolen because of being so precious and useful. The laptops tend to break more easily due to their fragileness.
Latest tech • Now a days “ Apple Mac book” is very popular amongst teenagers as well as adults. • Now Sony is about to release the Vaio “Z” series which can work like a desktop… or if the user wishes, he can operate it like a laptop.
