Eubacteria • Domain- Bacteria • Kingdom- Eubacteria
Common Characteristics • Prokaryotic cells • Unicellular • Autotroph or heterotroph • Replicate Asexually • Cell is a complex structure
Key Characteristics • Found more in people and foods than in nature • Cell wall made of peptidogylcan • Treated by antibiotics -ex. Strep Throat
Archaebacteria • Domain- Archaea • Kingdom- Archaebacteria
Common Characteristics • -Prokaryotic cells • -Unicellular • -Autotroph or heterotroph • -Replicate Asexually • -Cell is a simple structure
More ancient than eubacteria • No peptidogylcan in cell walls • Known as Extremophiles because they are mostly found in extreme environments • Ex. Boiling hot springs, salty lakes, thermal vents, mud of marshes where there is no oxygen

Characteristics of Viruses • Nonliving strand of genetic material within a protein coat • NO organelles • Can NOT move, make proteins, or replicate on its own - MUST rely on a host cell • Virus are so small, scientist must use electron microscopes to study them
Virus Structure • All viruses are made up of: - Nucleic Acid: either RNA or DNA, NEVER both. -Capsid: outer layer made of proteins which contain and protect the genetic material • May have tail fibers and projections to aid in attachment.
Replication • Replication can occur through either two cycles: - Lytic Cycle - Lysogenic Cycle • Viruses DO NOT kill cell immediately but uses the cell. • http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0078802849/student_view0/unit5/chapter18/concepts_in_motion.html#
Prevention • Vaccines are used to help PREVENT the replication, entry, release, etc. of viruses. • Viruses can NOT be treated, ONLY prevented. • Why are vaccines hard to make?
What is a virus? • What two macromolecules make up the capsid of a virus? • Why are viruses non-living? • What do viruses inject into the host cell to get replicated? • What is a bacteriophage? • What are vaccinations made of? • Why is there no good vaccine against HIV or the common cold?
