  2. Kwakiutl Indians of the Northwest Region

  3. Longhouse Living They lived in longhouses built of thick cedar planks. These homes were also called plankhouses. They could hold up to 40 people!

  4. Food The Kwakiutl Indians hunted for caribou,deer, beaverandrabbits. They fished for salmon. They used canoesmade of cedar to fish. Do you think it was dangerous hunting whale?

  5. Kwakiutl Clothing The Kwakiutls used bark from the cedar tree to make clothing. They would also use animal skins to make rain capes and coats.

  6. Potlatch • They were held by a wealthy member of the tribe. • Members of the family would come and they would receive gifts from the host including: • canoes • slaves • jewelry

  7. Totem Poles Kwakiutl Indians made Totem Polesto tell family legends, events, or stories. These tall wooden carvings are made out of cedar trees.
