  1. 14-16 May 2018 Paulina Masemola Investigating the ability of NSC results to act as a predictor of academic success at higher education institutions in South Africa

  2. Outline • Background • Purpose of the study • Research Methodology • Results • Limitations of the study • Way forward

  3. Background • Pre-1994-White and Black schools • Post-1994-Provincial Exams -HG and SG • From 2008- National Exams-single Grade • The purpose of NSC among others is to prepare learners for further studies • And also to provide learners with a school-leaving certificate

  4. Continued… • NSC qualification created uncertainties among universities. • In 2008-High number of students qualified for university admission. • In 2009-Universities experienced higher-than-normal failure rates.

  5. Continued… • National Senior Certificate examination results and HE entrance

  6. Purpose of the study To investigate the ability of NSC results to predict the student’s probability of meeting the requirements to progress into the second year of study

  7. Research Methodology • The pilot study was a joint study with UP, UJ and Wits. • The study focused on the academic performance of full-time, first-time entering South African students registered in 2009 to 2012

  8. continued…. • The variable of interest was “academic success” and the independent variables where Physical Science, Mathematics and English • The selection of these subjects was informed by the admission requirements imposed by the South African higher education institutions. • The “academic success” was defined as students having met the minimum requirements to proceed into their second year of study.

  9. continued…. • The logistic regression technique was used since the outcome variable “academic success” is dichotomous i.e., either 0 or 1 (where the value 1 indicated success and the value 0 indicates failure) • Each institution analyzed the data separately • Analysis was done at faculty level(Engineering and Built Environment)

  10. General Results • All three institutions faced their highest failure rates in 2009. • Institutions implemented a range of support initiatives i.e. interventions strategies at first-year level. • The NSC results still predict academic success across the three institutions, even if only to a limited extent. • Mathematics and PhysicalScience were consistently significant predictors of academic success across the three institutions.

  11. Limitations of the study • Definition of the outcome variable was problematic. • Not possible to account for unknown covariates. There were a lot of unknown covariates which some were measurable and other unmeasurable • E.g. various interventions • The academic success was measured at the end of the year.

  12. Way forward • To conduct a study that focuses on full-time first-time entering students registered at more institutions of higher learning in South Africa looking at: • Investigating the relationship between NSC subjects and higher institution subjects Thank You
