ENHEMS-Buildings – Enhancement of Research, Development and Technology Transfer Capacities in Energy Management Systems for BuildingsAsst. Prof. Mario VašakUniversity of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computingmario.vasak@fer.hrInternational Workshop “Upgrading Life in Historical Towns –Sustainable Energy”Dubrovnik, 3rd October, 2013
Overview • UNIZG-FER strategic R&D directions • Laboratory for Renewable Energy Systems (LARES) • Overview of related R&D projects in LARES • ENHEMS-Buildings • Idea behind • Objectives • Conclusions
Strategic R&D directions of UNIZG-FER Smartintegrated transport Safe, cleanandefficient energy Inclusive, innovativeandsafesocieties ICT & Advanced materials Health Nextgenerationnetworksandservices Manufacturingand service economy
Smart City Smartintegrated transport • A concept of integration and interoperation Safe, cleanandefficient energy Inclusive, innovativeandsafesocieties Smart City Health Nextgenerationnetworksandservices Manufacturingand service economy
Safe, clean and efficient energy • Renewable energy sources and systems • Efficiency • Longevity • Reliability • Integration in energy systems • Smart grids • Enable and exploit bidirectional horizontal and vertical energy and information flows • Topics of research in Laboratory for Renewable Energy Systems
Laboratory for Renewable Energy Systems • Smart-City-relevant R&D projects: • IPA III.C ENHEMS-Buildings • ICT-based concepts for energy-efficient operation of buildings in dynamical conditions • HRZZ-MICROGRID • Optimisation of DC microgrids integrating residential generation, storage and consumption units • FP7-DYMASOS • System of systems concepts for integration of microgrids on a distribution network • FP7-UrbanWater • Managing urban water distribution network for optimising water distribution costs and improving efficiency in water consumption
ENHEMS-Buildings idea behind • Constantly changing conditions in which the building operates • External: • Atmospheric conditions (temperature, solar irradiance, wind...) • Price and availability of energy from energy grids • ... • Internal: • User’s preferences and behaviour • State of energy storages in the building • ...
ENHEMS-Buildings idea behind • Collect information from building subsystems • Predict information on external building conditions (weather forecast, grid forecast) • Predict the users’ behaviour and preferences • Process the information and based on the building model decide how to operate/coordinate the building subsystems on a prediction horizon • Ensure comfort • Minimize costs • Provide consumption forecast to power flow optimisation in a building (bottom-up approach to smart city/grid)
ENHEMS-Buildings goal • Residing on the fact that ICT is a core technology for integration of diverse expertises relevant for buildings • mechanical • architectural • constructional • .... we have a long-term goal to Establish a multiplicative transfer of engineering technologies in Energy Management Systems for Buildings from Croatian higher education institutions and public research organisations to small-medium enterprises
ENHEMS-Buildings – how to reach the goal? interact with the real sector – change them and yourself modelling, control, estimation, open building communication show it is feasible, show it pays off, show it is open for extension and further integration forecast solar irradiance for location, make forecast available gather expertises around ICT open common research
ENHEMS-Buildings – who we are (for now)? interact with the real sector – change them and yourself modelling, control, estimation, open building communication show it is feasible, show it pays off, show it is open for extension and further integration forecast solar irradiance for location, make forecast available gather expertises around ICT open common research
ENHEMS-Buildings – what is the demo? UNIZG-FER skyscraper building, two floors Demonstration of coordination between fan colis based on the overall building model Masurement of overall energy consumption before and after installation
Concluding remarks • ICT in raising energy-efficiency of buidlings protected as a cultural heritage • Is always the option and might be the only option • UNIZG-FER skyscraper building, as the demo site of the project ENHEMS-Buildings, is the protected cultural heritage • Incorporation of interoperation between buildings subsystems is done in a non-invasive way, using open communication standards • Soft retrieval to the system configuration before the intervention • The interoperation for saving energy can function as a service
