  2. Seed Planted for A Greener Beye, Spring ‘08 • Inspired by Holmes School - first initiators of ZW activity in OP (Jan’08 IL DCEO Zero Waste grant app) • Thanks to: Michelle Vanderlaan (PTO), Suzie Hackmiller (Principal), Michelle Robinson, Julie Ledogar, Jodie Wine, Bess Celio.

Beye Begins its ZW Journey FALL ‘08 Beye Green Team formed (10 parents) • Mission: Contribute to “greening” of Beye by engaging students and school community with initiatives that increase thesustainabilityof Beye’sdaily operationsandongoing school life. (Goals) • Create a culture from within community/student-led & demanded • PTOpresentation/vote Nov. • Green Ambassadors(we’re all on green team) WINTER ‘08 Waste Assessment (grant requirement) GreenMySchool contest

Spring ’09: Beye Green Gets Busy March:Beye applies for $10K IL DCEO grant led by Seven Generations Ahead (SGA), w/ D97 schools Hatch, Lincoln, Longfellow, Mann, Whittier. • Waste reduction (recycling, composting) • Source reduction (hand dryers, paper reuse, new dishwasher) http://www.commerce.state.il.us/dceo/Bureaus/Energy_Recycling/Education/ISTEP_Zero_Waste_Schools.htm Thurs packets reduced 80% Green Survey

  5. Summer ’09: Good News & Gearing Up • Jul:Grants received by all 6 D97 schools that applied! (Lev1/Lev2) • Aug:Plans for ZW processes, implementation, support Fall ’09: Beye Goes ZW Full Force Aug, Day 1: Established lunchroom sorting stations(food in trash for 2 mos) Oct: D97 installed four hand dryers at Beye Nov: True composting! • 11/2: 6 tumblers installed at Beye (Filled with shredded paper thanks to OP’s American Mobile Shredding) • 11/9: Fruits/veggies into first tumbler • Sorting video by students

  6. Winter ’10: Reusables arrive! • Mar:2nd grant applic - dishwasher, more hand dryers, smartbd, shredder. • Apr:Sawdust for composters thanks to OP’s Oak Design & Construction Jan:dishwasher; reusable trays, utensils, napkin disp. No more straws.

  7. Spring’10: Current Initiatives • Awaiting ’10-’11 grant info • Earth month! http://beyeschoolpto.org/website/budget/green-team/ • Green library in media center • ZW: Worm bins in 7 classrooms

  8. Spring’10: Where We Are Now • Lunchroom reusables instead of disposables • Hand dryers in 1/3 of Beye washrooms • Composting approx 1/2 of lunchroom food • Encouraging double-sided paper use

By the #s: Some Successes Current school year (as of Earth Day 4/22/10) Waste Reduction • 2,256 lbs of compostable food waste diverted • 3,895 lbs of liquid waste diverted Source Reduction • 735 lbs of disposable trays (10,000 trays - based on avg of 200 hot lunches/day since dishwasher) • 392 lbs of paper towels (based on 1-day waste assessment) Before ZW, Beye was filling a 6-cu yd dumpster 2x/wk. Post ZW, it is half-full 2x/wk (waste cut by half).

Looking Back: Lessons/Refinements • Current compost system • Labor intensive • Not comprehensive; no meat/dairy (even w/ Nature Mill) • Moisture content high (too much green/nitrogen) • Requires lots of carbon • Not enough capacity (weight is main limitation) • Freezes in winter • Desired compost system • Industrial composter • Meat/dairy as well as fruit/vegs (what we’re composting now) • Alleviate carbon/browns • Some waste reduction challenges • Paper reuse before recycling (1-sided, 2-sided paper) • Some recyclables going into trash • Teaching families what is trash vs. what is recyclable/compostable • Some learnings • Principal, teacher, student/family buy-in & partnership critical • Education & communication are ongoing (eg, newsltrs, quizzes, ZW Lunch) • Guidance by SGA (& D97 schools forum) was crucial, esp in first year • Incentives/contests/fun go a long way (local business help) • Some good resources found: NatGeo green videos

  11. A Greener Beye Looks Forward • More response, home-grown culture year-by-year! • Hoping to compare benchmark w/ repeat survey • Hoping to implement another $10K grant • PepsiRefresh “buddy” grant app for industrial composter

Goals • Raise environmental awareness amongst Beye students, families, and staff members. • Support and create opportunities for green education for Beye students, families, and staff. • Select projects geared toward reducing waste of all kinds, optimizing theecological efficiency and environmental soundness of the school facilityitself. • Select projects that optimize the health and well-being of the Beye School community.

  14. How Do We Propose Achieving Our Goals? Strategies • Create/implement tangible green initiatives that actively involvemain stakeholders – our students -- to as great a degree as possible in order to ensure future sustainability. • Work closely withBeye staff to obtain input, coordination, and execution for appropriate areas. • Maximize synergies with other Beye Committees/Groups, including Wellness and Student Council. • MaximizeD97 overlaps and efficiencies whenever possible. • Identify and involveappropriate local organizations that are equipped to help Beye meet green objectives.

  15. A Greener Beye Will Attempt to Address the Following Categories

  16. A Greener Beye: 2008-2009 Initiatives • Benchmark Survey. Help craft audience-appropriate strategy/plan. Allow for optimal positioning of initiatives. Provide ability to measure changes in attitudes, perceptions over time. 2.Zero Waste (<90%) Grant Proposal.Major opportunity to reduce ongoing solid waste from daily, school-wide activities with strong student involvement. (IL Dept of Commerce & Opportunity / OPRF Community Foundation) 3. Green My School Contest. CBS/Ecozone. $100K for winning Suburban Cook County school; could be applied to Green Plan Initiatives for this year and next. Heavy student involvement. 4. Thursday Packet Streamlining. Reduce solid waste generated by daily school activities and operations; favor electronic document delivery. 5. GreenBits Tips/Facts. Simple way to distribute information and raise awareness through existing school communication vehicles. 6. Education Program. Not a single set of initiatives, but ongoing and with heavy student and school community engagement. 1-2 possible activities this year. 7. Earth Month: Bike Week, No Idling, Beye School “Rocks!” Harness existing awareness and larger PR/Media effort of Earth Day/Month to generate excitement and action in April 2009.
