  2. Situation 1 • You are a commander of a German U-Boat in 1915. You are cruising on the surface off the coast of Great Britain. Suddenly you see eight destroyers bearing down on you. • You have Four Choices:

  3. U-Boat Choices • 1. Full Speed away • 2. Fire Torpedoes • 3. Head for the bottom • 4. Move in and fire your guns

  4. Option 1 • Full speed away • Not Your Best Choice • U-boats are a lot slower than the destroyers

  5. Option 2 • Fire Torpedoes Not Your Best Choice Destroyers would most likely avoid the torpedoes . If you are in torpedo range then you are most certainly in gun range. You would be blasted out of the water

  6. Option 3 • Head for the bottom • BEST CHOICE • This is the obvious choice. If you are at the bottom you are safe. The depth charge has not been invented yet

  7. Option 4 • Move in and fire your guns • Not your best choice The submarine deck gun is no match for the firepower of one destroyer, let alone eight.

  8. Situation 2 • You are a commander of a German U-Boat in 1915. You are cruising on the surface off the coast of Great Britain. Suddenly you see a small fishing boat • You have Four Choices:

  9. U-Boat Meets Fishing Boat • 1. Full Speed away • 2. Fire Torpedoes • 3. Head for the bottom • 4. Move in and fire your guns • And The Best Answer is????

  10. U-Boat Meets Fishing Boat • Option 4 • Move in and fire your guns

  11. U-Boat Mission • At this point in time your orders say to return home, but you have some torpedoes left. You would like to try a location off the coast of Ireland. • Do you follow orders? • If you go home the Game is over.

  12. U-Boat Meets Ocean Liner • You see a large liner moving fast. It will pass by you if you do not act. • Do you fire torpedoes (1 ) or lie quietly and let it pass? (2)

  13. Congratulations • You Just Sunk the Lusitania!!!

  14. Sinking of the Lusitania • May 7, 1915 British Ocean Liner was torpedoed. • It sunk in 18 minutes • 139 U.S. citizens were killed • 1,198 killed out of 1959 passengers • “Cruiser Rules” • Key Event which led the U.S. into WWI • Siding with the Allies
