Vocabulary to Know • Widget = Widgets A "widget" is an application that ic created by/on another website and put onto a personal website. Widgets often have interactive features. And are normally added to social networking profiles and blogs Examples: photo slide shows, videos, music playlists, animations • Embed= The act of using computer code to place something, such as a video or songon a webpage or blog. When something is "embedded" on a Web page, the user can watch the video or listen to the song without leaving the page. Example: posting a music video on Facebook
Making a Page for Your Voki • Logon to fotclass2012.wikispaces.com • Create your own wiki if you have not done so already. You can give your wiki the same name as your username, or make up something else. • On the Home Page for your wiki, click on “edit” to delete the wikispace text. Type your name and your FoT period and click on “Save.” • Go to the side bar and click on the + signnext to “Pages and Files” to create a new page connected to your Home Page • Name this new Page “Voki” • Now you are going to pick a question from the list on the next slide and type your answer on this new page. Your must fully answer the question in one paragraph—no more, no less. You can use the textbooks and Communication.ppt to help you answer the question you select. • Click “save” to save your answer. • Great! When you make your Voki, you will simply copy/paste this dialogue into the text-to-speech box
Pick a question to have your voki answer: • Explain the differences between data and information and give at least one example of each. • Explain the three purposes of communication and then explain the differences between edutainment and infotainment • What is telecommunication? Give 3 examples and explain why it is important to worldwide communication and international business
Making a Voki • Go to http://www.voki.com/ and click on the top left “Create” tab • Click the “Text to Speech” option on the second bubble. • Now, copy/paste your answer from the Voki Page that you made for your wiki. Click “Done” • Now you can play around with the way the character looks/speaks/backgrounds/etc. • When you are finished creating your character, click on “publish” in the bottom right corner. • Name your Scene “Communication” and click “Save” • A box will appear, asking you if you want to sign up for Voki. Select the “No Thanks” button on the right • Close the “Scene as Been Saved” box. Now you will see a box on the right that says “Embed Code.” Click on this code to copy it. You will now embed this animation on your wikispace. • Go back to the Voki Page you created. Click on edit and click on the “Widget Button” at the top center of the editing page. • Click on “Video” in the left hand bar and select “Other Video” • Paste the embed code that you copied from the Voki page and click “Save” • Now click the “save” button at the top of your editing page. After the page saves, your Voki should appear on your page as it did on the Voki website.
