Problem • What variables can change the amount of time required to complete a maze?
Materials • Printed Maze
Procedure • Obtain a printed maze. Have your classmate time how long it takes to complete the maze. Record this time in the control section of chart. • Choose a way to change the experiment, write this under independent variable. • For constants, write all the factors that will stay the same. • Write a hypothesis on how the independent variable will affect the time. • Record the time required to complete the maze as the dependent variable. (3 times)
Graph Time to complete maze Control Independent variable Treatment
Conclusion • Summarize the lab activity and explain if your hypothesis was supported or rejected (use your data to justify your response). • What is the scientific method? How was the scientific method used for this lab? • What is a control? Explain the importance of a control in this experiment. • Why is it important that scientific experiments be repeated? • What is the difference between a dependent and an independent variable? • What is the difference between a theory and a hypothesis? • By completing the maze more than once you introduce another variable. What is this variable? This variable likely affected the time required to complete the maze. How would you eliminate this variable? Would eliminating this variable solve the problem? Explain. • Design an experiment to test the effects of salt water on seed germination. What would be your control, independent variable and dependent variable? Complete a chart similar to the data chart.
