Energy Flow • The energy needed for life to exist comes from the sun. • Before the sun’s energy can be used by cells it needs to be turned into ATP. ATP
Sun light to ATP • Light energy is captured by the chloroplast. • Photosynthesis converts the light energy into glucose (sugar). • Glucose is broken down into ATP in a process called cellular respiration.
Cellular respiration • The formula for cellular respiration is • C6H12O6 + 6O2→ 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP • Cellular respiration takes place in the cytoplasm and mitochondria of cells. • Cellular respiration produces 38 ATP molecules for every glucose molecule.
The 3 parts of cellular respiration • The first part is called glycolysis and it occurs in the cytoplasm. • The second and third part are called the Krebs cycle and Electron transport chain they both occur in the mitochondria.
Cellular Respiration & Muscles • In order for cellular respiration to take place oxygen is needed. • Oxygen is delivered to cells by breathing. • Carbon dioxide is a waste product of cellular respiration. • You remove carbon dioxide from your body by breathing.
When there is no Oxygen • There are times when your cells run out of oxygen, like during difficult exercise. • Your cells still need a way to get energy. • Lactic acid fermentation supplies energy when oxygen is low.
Lactic Acid Fermentation • Lactic acid fermentation gives you 2 ATPs for every glucose. • Cellular respiration gives 38 ATPs • Lactate is the waste product of lactic acid fermentation. • The collection of lactate is the cause of muscle soreness. 2 ATPs 38 ATPs
Summary • What needs to happen to light energy before your cells can use it? • What organelle captures the energy from the sun? • What is cellular respiration? • Where does cellular respiration take place? • What is lactic acid fermentation? When does it occur?
