  1. Biodiversity Fill in your notes as we go!

  2. Biodiversity • Biodiversity: the variety of species in an area • Measured by the number of different species • Places with the most biodiversity: • The rainforest and coral reef

  3. Why biodiversity is important • More species means a more stable environment • If a species is lost from an ecosystem, it can affect other species in the area

  4. Threats to Biodiversity • Habitat loss: clear cutting the land destroys habitats that cannot be easily replaced • Without those habitats plants and animals become vulnerable to extinction • Habitat degradation: damage to a habitat by pollution

  5. Threats to Biodiversity • Habitat fragmentation: breaking wilderness areas up into smaller pieces • The smaller the fragment, the less biodiversity the area can support

  6. Threats to Biodiversity • Exotic Species: introducing a species that is not native to the area • These species can cause problems for the native species • Example: kudzu

  7. Protecting Biodiversity • Legal Protection • U.S. Endangered Species Act: It is illegal to harm any species on the endangered or threatened list • Preserving habitats • Natural preserves and National parks

  8. Protecting Biodiversity • Habitat Corridors • Protected strips of land that allow the migration of organisms from one wilderness area to another

  9. Protecting Biodiversity • Captivity • Some species only exist in zoos and parks because they have no habitat out in the wild • Reintroducing Species • Release organisms into an area where the species once lived
