The City of Tampere • Tampere is located 170 km north from Helsinki • Tampere is the third biggest city in Finland and the biggest inland city in the Nordic countries • The population of Tampere is 210 000 • The population of Tampere Central Region is 350 000(with its neighbouring municipalities) • Surface area: 688 km2 - land area 76 % and water area 24 % • The average population density 400 people/km2 • Housing stock 2007: 120 000 housing
The data sources used in Tampere • 1. The findings from the survey sent to the organisations, which are working with homeless people • 2. The register of applicants for the social housing administered by the city • 3. The findings from the survey sent to the prisons

How long have been staying in the unit (duration of staying in the unit) • 12. What is the reason for living in the unit (reason for homelessness)
2. The register of applicants for social housing of the City • The client register consists of 3 500 applicants • From the register it can contact people who have informed that they are homeless • From the list are excluded • a) those whose place of registration or domicile is other than Tampere • b) those whose need for housing is other than current homelessness (e.g. young people under 25 yrs living with parents, applicants who have to move from their current dwelling in the short term, applicants who are moving to Tampere in the near future and have not yet found a new apartment)
3. The findings from the prison survey • 5 prisons, where there are prisoners from Tampere • How many of them are or will be released monthly during the period from July to December without their own dwelling in Tampere. • Only the number of released prison from November is included in ARA’s housing market survey
