IB Art Seminar 2 FinalTheme: Transformation & ChangeStandard Level A By Alexandra Skrinnik
Candidate Statement At first, I expressed art in forms of mere sketches and doodles—obviously lacking the skills as I didn’t take it quite serious. It was in IB art 1 that I had the chance to develop myself as an artist. I was quick to paint in acrylic and watercolor. I feel comfortable with these ‘safe’ mediums and thus stuck by them. My only ambition in art was to create what was aesthetically pleasing and to disregard the rest, however I soon found myself disappointed with the outcomes. I realized that new ideas, new methods, and using different, unfamiliar mediums were the way to go. In a sense this was the path from my closed mind to the freedom of creativity that I needed. Over the summer I got involved in the lives of many new people and their families. They became transparent and exposed their situations, problems, and pain to me. It’s because of my involvement in these families that led me to my theme of change and transformation. It was also a reminder of my own experience of transformation during my life. IB Art taught me that in hard situations the only option is to use what you got—to hold on to anything you can. I want to implement this concept further when creating my artwork. I scrape up anything I find including cardboard, olive oil, paint, make up, etc. I attempt to use substances that appeal to me in my own life. Almost all my work contains oil because it has the most significance in my life symbolically. I often stumble when trying to create pieces that express what I know. And the only things I can know and fully understand are through what I experience myself—this to me is true. Through it all, I want my art to be authentic because that’s the most effective in the lives of others. It’s what I need, it’s what I want. IB art helped me develop as a artist and taught me ways of expressing myself.
