Competencies: • Core Competencies for Entry into the Profession of Dental Hygiene • Dental hygienists must complete an accredited educational program and qualify for licensure in any state or jurisdiction. They practice in collaboration with dental and other health care professionals in a variety of settings. • Core Competencies (C) • C.1 Apply a professional code of ethics in all endeavors. • C.2 Adhere to state and federal laws, recommendations, and regulations in the provision of oral health care. • C.3 Use critical thinking skills and comprehensive problem-solving to identify oral health care strategies that promote patient health and wellness. • C.4 Use evidence-based decision making to evaluate emerging technology and treatment modalities to integrate into patient dental hygiene care plans to achieve high-quality, cost-effective care.
Syllabi • General Learning Objectives (related to Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) and Competencies are included in every syllabus • They are linked to overall competencies
Curriculum Review • All topics covered in each course is listed in one document • Faculty meet annually for a “curriculum retreat” • Have retreat at someone’s else and have FOOD! • Take us about 4 hours to review • Move topics around and look for “gaps” in the curriculum
Curriculum Review • DNHY 301 Dental Anatomy - FQ 1st yr • -Dental nomenclature • -Numbering systems (universal, Palmer) • -Collective tooth morphology • -Physiologic tooth form • -Incisors, canines, premolars, molars • -Deciduous teeth • -Root morphology • DNHY 310 Radio I - FQ 1st yr. • -History of radiology • -Production of radiographs-image formation • -Radiography infection control • -The xray machine • -Diagnostic quality of dental radiographs • -Radiation biology • -Digital radiography • -Radiologic health/protection • -Intraoral radiology techniques on Dexter • -Processing & film mounting procedures • -Analysis of errors/artifacts • -Parallel and bisecting techniques
Curriculum Management Plan • Links all competencies/learning objectives with the courses • Helps look for competencies/learning objectives that are not covered in enough courses
Program Assessment Plan • Links the curriculum management plan, curriculum review, and student learning outcomes
