  1. phenols Describe the reactions of phenol with aqueous alkali and with sodium to form salts. Discuss the role of phenol as an early antiseptic.

  2. Animal Memories! Pick an animal that you like

  3. Animal Memories! • Now using each letter of the animal that you have chosen, come up with a list of words that you have learned about in this topic

  4. phenol • Organic compound with a hydroxyl group attached directly to a benzene ring. • If an aromatic compound has an –OH group attached directly to a side chain on the benzene ring it is described as an aromatic alcohol • Try and decide whether the next compounds are phenols or aromatic alcohols

  5. Phenol or not Phenol

  6. Phenol or not Phenot

  7. Phenol or not Phenol

  8. Phenol or not Phenol

  9. Phenol or not Phenot

  10. Phenol or not Phenot

  11. phenol • Phenol is the simplest phenol • One hydrogen on the benzene ring has been replaced by an –OH group • Solid at RTP • Slightly soluble in water due to the –OH group forming hydrogen bonds with the water (less soluble than alcohols though)

  12. ‘Strong’ and ‘weak’ acids • Acids must dissolve in water before they show their acidic properties because in water all acids ionise (split up) • All acidic solutions have H+ (aq) ions in common • Strong acid ionising in water • Water • HCl (aq) H+ (aq) + Cl- (aq) • Weak acid ionising in water • CH3COOH (aq) CH3COO- (aq) + H+ (aq)

  13. Reactions of phenol to form salts • Phenol forms a weak acidic solution • It loses H+ ions from the alcohol group only • C6H5OH + aq C6H5O- + H+ • What do we use to neutralise acids? • What are the products of neutralisation?

  14. Phenol is neutralised by aqueous sodium hydroxide to form the salt sodium phenoxide (C6H5O-Na+) and water. • Sodium phenoxide is an ionic salt – don’t draw a bond between the O and the Na as that would imply that it is covalent

  15. Reaction with sodium • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGaWwnMyKVE • Observe the reactions of sodium metal with water, ethanoic acid and ethanol. • Which reaction would be most similar to sodium + phenol?

  16. Products • Sodium effervesces producing hydrogen gas • Forms sodium phenoxide (C6H5O-Na+), a salt. • Can you write the balanced symbol equation for the reaction between sodium metal and phenol. • Now draw the skeletal formula for the reaction

  17. questions • Complete questions 1 – 3 on page 17 • Complete question 3 on page 42

  18. Focus on phenol • Use the iPads to research the history of phenol in medicine • Research Lister’s discovery and the problem’s with carbolic acid
