9. The village of Raveloe, in the English Midlands , was surrounded by green hills, woods and fileds . It was a pretty little place, far away any big town.

11. Raveloe had a beautiful old church.Opposite the church was a big red-brick house. These were the two most important buildings in the village.

13. The old church was the centre of village life. And the Red House was the home of Squire Cass and his two sons.

15. The Squire was respected by all the people of Ravelo.He owned most of The land around the village and many of the villagers worked for him.

17. A little , one-roomed cottage stood outside the village.

19. Beside the cottage was a stone-pit .No one dug stone from the pit any more and it was usually full of water.

23. The sound of the weaver’s loom could be heard every day.It could even be heard on a Sunday because the weaver never went to church.

25. The weaver’s name was Silas Marner. Silas had come to Raveloe fifteen years earlier.No one in the village knew his sad story.

27. Unhappiness and years of hard work at his heavy loom had changed Silas. The weaver was nearly forty years old now, but he looked much older.

39. Silas loved his gold and was afraid of losing it. So he hid the two bags in a secret place under the brick floor of the cottage.

40. Every night, Silas locked the door.Then he took out the bags and emptied them onto the table.

42. The shining coins poured out. To Silas, the gold seemed alive.The gold coins were his family and his friends.He worked and worked to get more gold.

43. Silas was not interested in his neighbours and their lives.Day after day,he worked at his loom and spoke to no one.

45. And, as he worked, he thought only of his gold. But very soon,Silas Marner’s life was going to be change for a second time.
