mexico city: real sustainable city. Energy and public transportation. Dra. Ivett Montelongo Buenavista Tarragona, Spain, 2014
The dream Hidrocabons (petroleoum) is finishing …. At least cheap petroleum … what are we going to do …. How we are going to face climate change Mexico City’s answer: In 2013 Mexico City was received the “city climate leadership awards” and other environmental awards. So it means that this city have to become into a sustainable city …
Mexico City • Is the biggest and (as you already imagine) is most polluted city in the country. • City’s surface: 2240 m2
Air pollution in the City • The main problem • In this city and in its metropolitan areas shares space for more than 6 million of vehicles which contribute with the 90% of CO2 and suspended particles • More than 20 million of people lives in the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City. • More than 23 million of trips in the metropolis dayli, and 80% by public transportation
The dilemma • Continue in theusing of hidrocarbons • Transformthecityinto a real sustainablecity
Policy on transportation • More highways, more streets, more transport • Low prices on gasoline • No investment on public transportation • Any policy to stop urban growing • Credits on private vehicles • Large trips between homes and places of work • Public transportation do not cover all the city • Public transportation is old and crowded
Energypolicies in the City • Subsidyongasoline • Notpromotionon new fuels • Not enoughbenefitsforusingvehiclesby natural gas, electricity, etc. • Fewelectricalpublictransportation
Environmentalpolicies • “hoy no circula” • Emissions verification from vehicles from government, from other cities, merchandise transportation • Transport corridors
Whatdoesthecityneeds… • Work together climate change policies: Real public – transportation policy • Increase public transportation to cover all the citizens demands • Increase clean public transportation • Reduce gcirculation in the city • Make expensive to have a car that pollutes more • Redesign the infrastructure of the City, considering the promotion of other kind of vehicles like bikes
