  1. Animals and Scientific Method Review Ms. Angel’s Class

  2. The Scientific Method • Purpose • Research • Hypothesis • Experiment • Analysis • Conclusion

  3. Vertebrates • Animals that have a backbone • Examples include dogs, frogs, snakes, sharks, leopards, zebras, opossoms, birds, etc.

  4. Invertebrates • Animals that do not have a backbone • Examples include crabs, butterflies, spiders, June Bugs, etc.

  5. Arthropods • The largest group of invertebrates • Have legs with several joints. • Examples include crabs, spiders, and ants etc.

  6. What are some basic needs of animals? • Food • Water • Climate • Oxygen • Shelter

  7. What is an adaptation? • a body part or behavior that helps an animal meet its needs in its environment. • What are some body part adaptations?

  8. What are some body covering adaptations? • Fur • Spikes • Spines

  9. What are some color/shape adaptations? • Camouflage • Mimicry

  10. Camouflage • an animal’s body color or pattern that helps it blend in with its surroundings. • Ex. Snowshoe hare

  11. Mimicry • an adaptation in which an animal looks very much like another animal. • Ex. Viceroy and monarch butterflies

  12. What are behavior adaptations • A behavior that an animal has, which allows it to survive in its environment. • Can be learned or instinct.

  13. Instinct • A behavior adaptation that an animal is born with. • Ex. Migration and hibernation

  14. Migration • Migration is when animals travel long distances to meet their needs. • Ex. Monarch butterflies, and Snow Geese

  15. Hibernation • Hibernation is a period when an animal goes into a long, deep “sleep”. • Ex. Bears and squirrels

  16. Learned Behaviors • Behaviors that an animal learns from other animals and experiences. • Ex. Tiger cubs learning to hunt from their parents and Chimpanzees communicating.
