The SANGHATIKA Initiative by DRDA Wardha aims to nurture and form SHGs by appointing grassroots workers, enhancing self-help principles and economic activities, serving as a liaison between Govt and SHGs. With remuneration and incentives, Sanghatikas facilitate SHG formation, training, and economic progress, leading to community development in Wardha.

Background • Network of 4000 SHGs in Wardha • Group formation done by 11 NGOs • 9 NGOs formed 1306 SHGs • 2700 SHGs formed by Panchayat Samiti level extension officers and grassroot level Government machinery • Irregular nurturing and follow up of SHGs due to lack of dedicated machinery • Hence the initiative called “SANGHATIKA”
SANGHATIKA • SANGHATIKA -- a grassroot worker appointed to form new SHGs and nurture new and old SHGs in Wardha district • preferably a member of some SHG and has experience in running day to day activities of the group • well versed in maintaining accounts of the group • helps the group understand the principles of selp help,microcredit and micro enterprise • similar socio economic background • bridge between the Government Banks and SHGs
Remuneration • DRDA to appoint Sanghatikas vide sec 3.8 and Annexure 2 of the guidelines issued by the Govt Of India • The proposal sanctioned by the Governing Body vide resolution no 5 dated 12/10/2007 • Remuneration of Rs 30 per month per SHG • Additional incentive • Rs 200 on formation of the SHG • Rs 300 after first gradation of the group • Rs 400 after disbursement of loan to the SHG • Rs 100 after full repayment of loan by the SHG • Travelling Allowance Rs 500 per month
Status • Advertisement of selection given in newspapers. • Applicants underwent a group discussuion session followed by personal interview. • 87 Sanghatikas selected • Residential Training of one week duration at Yatriniwas, Sewagram in May 2008 • Refresher course of one week duration at NIRD Hyderabad in April 2009
Work Done by Sanghatikas • 700 new groups formed in 10 months against 450 SHGs formed in 2007-08 • Basic training of 600 SHGs against 400 SHGs in 2007-08 • First gradation of 600 SHGs done • Attendence of SHG members in trainings rose sharpely from 50% to 85% • Sanghatikas spreading awareness amongst SHG members regarding Open Defecation Free Village
