  4. World War I • Borden was Prime Minister during the entirety of WWI • In 1914 he passed the War Measures Act and committed 500,000 men to the War effort • Due to this commitment he was forced to use conscription • This caused an outbreak in the country and his cabinet • Quebec nationals opposed strongly as they had no ties to Britain or France

  5. World War I • This split forced Borden to make a Unionist Government • This crushed Laurier in the 1917 election • However, there was zero representation from Quebec on his cabinet, and he only won three seats in all of Quebec • During 1915 he travelled to Europe to see the troops, he was appalled at the devastation and the incompetence of the British officers

  6. The Treaty of Versailles • Borden was convinced that Canada had become a nation in it's own right on the battlefield • This prompted him to demand a seat to himself at the Paris Peace Conference • He got this even after both Britain and the US thought that he didn't deserve it • He acted as an ambassador between the US and Britain during the Treaty times

  7. Post War and Honours • Borden was the last Prime Minister to ever be knighted and he was all for Canadian Nationalism • He allowed the use of Military force in the Winnipeg General Strike • Retired in 1920 due to health reason • His health got better and he became Chancellor of Queen's University • His face is on the $100 Dollar bill • He has two towns and two schools named after him • In a Canadian Survey,Borden was ranked the 7th greatest Prime Minister

  8. Impact Borden was a very succesful man in both the political and business aspect of the world. He helped solidify Canadian Independence through the war and kept the nation together during difficult times. He was calm during a stressful period of history and served most Canadians very well. However he did not address the French-Canadian's needs and was highly criticized for doing so.
