Sparta seemed near defeat but then won some major battles. • In 421BC both sides agreed to a truce and stopped fighting. • After a few yrs the truce was broken. Athens attacked Sicily again. • However the Greeks of Sicily destroyed the Athenians with Spartan help. • Persia saw Athens weakness and gave money to Sparta to help them beat Athens. • In 404BC at the Battle of Aegospotami Sparta defeated Athens navy.
Sparta then attacked Athens itself. • Sparta kept food from reaching the city and the people soon began to starve. • Athens surrendered. They had to give up democracy (though it was soon restored).
