  1. A Life Cycle Assessment Based Tool for Comparison of Biofuel Alternatives Purpose To develop a spreadsheet based LCA tool for assessing the environmental footprint (environmental impact and resources) of different biofuel systems based on WtT (well to tank) boundaries Challenges Life cycle inventory stage. Gathering reliable information regarding industrial processes for biomass conversion and agricultural practices (energy crops, agricultural wastes) Description A hybrid approach usinga mixture of attributional and consequential LCA focused on the different conversion processes and adding a preliminary assessment of the feedstock related impacts will be used Schedule/Cost FY10 FY11 FY12 FY13 Milestones Scope and functional unit definition X LCI X LCIA X X Spreadsheet development X Development of a web based application X Payoff This tool can be used to compare feedstocks and technological alternatives, to identify areas of largest environmental impact. Will assist industry in: making managerial, financial and capital decisions, comparison with competing products or technologies, informing the public or submitting applications for eco-labelling or technology certification U$S 59.4K U$S 35K K U$S 63.5K Date: November 17, 2009 PIs: Adebayo Ogundipe and Washington Braida V2.1
