Purpose • Sarasota High School Instrumental music was INVITED by the National Association for Music Education (formerly Music Educators National Convention) to represent the state of Florida in its annual MUSIC EDUCATION WEEK • Music Education Week is an event designed to raise awareness to lawmakers about the importance of music in the public schools. • To learn from America’s greatest musicians
Preparation • Tuesday June 19 • Band 10am – 11am • Symphony 11:30am-12:30pm • Band/Guard 2pm-4pm • Symphony 4:30pm-6pm • Admirals 7-8:30 • Wednesday June 20 • Band 10am – 11am • Symphony 11:30am-12:30pm • Band/Guard 2pm-4pm • Symphony 4:30pm-6pm • Admirals 7-8:30
Itinerary 1 • Thursday June 21 • Depart SHS EARLY • Visit Parris Island Marine Band/Tour Parris Island • Continue to DC • Friday June 22 • Winds/String/Percussion students work with either US Marine Band or USAF Band • Guard work with Washington Ballet • Tour around DC Mall (visit Smithsonian Museums & memorials/monuments with chaperone groups) • Watch US Marine Band and Drum & Bugle Corps
Itinerary 2 • Saturday June 23 • Rally for Music Education and National Anthem Project Program • Performance at Sylvan Theater/Washington Monument (Band, Sailor Symphony, Admirals, Guard, Percussion, etc.) • Tour Smithsonian • Evening Guided Tour of DC monuments • Sunday June 24 • Arlington National Cemetery • Possible performance at Orioles home game • FAfME National Honors Ensembles Concert @ Kennedy Center
Itinerary 3 • Monday June 25 • Tour US Capitol OR White House • Depart for Sarasota • Arrive in Sarasota LATE Monday evening/EARLY Tuesday Morning • If you have suggestions, please email me. • banddirector@mightysailorband.org
Transportation • Martz Charter Buses • National syndication with depots in Tampa, Atlanta, Washington, and more • Great for cycling drivers for long hauls • Great in case of bus break down • Replacement buses and drivers are very near.
Lodging • 4-Star Hotel Accommodations • Still to be determined • The company we are using deals with Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriot • Previous Hotels Include • Hyatt-Dulles • Dulles Marriott
Meals • Breakfasts in DC Provided • 5 Breakfasts June 21-25 • Dinner in DC Provided • 3 Dinners June 22-24 • Includes Hard Rock Washington DC • Lunch on your own at DC museums & such • Lunch will be provided by Parris Island Marine Base on Thursday June 21st • Travel Meals • TO DC Breakfast & lunch provided, you are responsible for dinner that evening on the road • TO SRQ Breakfast is provided, you are responsible for lunch in DC and dinner on the road
Chaperons • Please sign up to chaperone • Sign up by January 5th through Natasha Lanie • volunteer@mightysailorband.org • We want to take EVERYONE in the Mighty Sailor Band Family • Once chaperones are determined, group sizes will be set.
