  2. When and where was he born? • Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Thuringia on March 21, 1685. • His father, Johann Ambrosius, was a court trumpeter and director of the musicians in Eisenach in Thuringia.

  3. Who was he • Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer during the Baroque time period. • He was also a violinist, harpsichordist, and organist. • He performed both sacred and secular works for orchestras, choirs, and for his solos. • He was a great composer and violinist during his time and is very highly regarded.

  4. His Family’s Influence • Johann was taught to play the violin and the harpsichord by his father. • His uncle, Johann Christopher Bach, taught him how to play the organ. • The Bach family had always held important positions that were related to music.

  5. His parents • His father was also a great composer. • His mother died in 1694 and his father died 8 months later. • At the age of ten he was left orphan. He moved in with his brother Johann Christopher Bach.

  6. Where he studied • At the age of 14 Johann and an older friend of his were awarded a scholarship to a very prestigious school. The name of the school was Michael’s School in Luneburg • In January 1703 he graduated from the prestigious school.

  7. After Graduation • After he graduated he didn’t work in music until some time late in his life. • He eventually met his first tutor and his tutor said he would make Johann his assistant and successor if he married his daughter. Johann however didn’t want to marry his daughter. • In 1706 Johann was offered another job with much higher conditions that what he had. He accepted the job and later married his second cousin.

  8. His wife • Johann’s wife was his second cousin, Maria Barbara Bach. • Together they had seven children. Four of them reached adulthood. • His children later became great composers.

  9. His death • Johann had many success in his life and he eventually died in July 28, 1750. • His death was sad to be the result of a failure in an eye operation. • Later scientist said it was a stroke that had been complicated by pneumonia. • His body was buried in Old St. John Cemetery in Leipzig. It was rediscovered and buried in the same place but the building was destroyed by allied bombing during the world war. So it was moved to Leipzig Church of St. Thomas.
