  2. Myths • Answer basic questions about the world (examples: human nature, the origin of the world, and the mysteries of nature) • Often considered truthful by their originators

  3. Folk Tales (Tall Tales, Fairy Tales) • Told primarily for entertainment rather than to explain or teach something • Characters may be animals, people, or superhuman beings.

  4. Fables • Brief tale that teaches a moral or lesson • Characters are often animals that act and speak like human beings.

  5. Legends • Story about a specific person – usually someone of heroic accomplishments • May have some basis in fact

  6. Common Elements • Keep the past alive • Teach lessons about human behavior • Reveal the values of a society
