Overview of the National Course A Course Award(A/B/C/D) is made on the basis of successful completion of both: • Unit Assessments (internal assessment conducted and marked by teacher/lecturer) AND • Course Assessment (the final external exam)
Introduction to Chinese Languages National Courses: Qualifications Framework
Introduction to Intermediate 2 : Units Two Units are assessed at this level: • Mandatory Language Unit (80 hours) AND • Optional Unit : - Extended Reading and Viewing* - Personal Communication* - Language in Work* *Candidates choose one of these three (40 hours)
Internal Assessment Mandatory Language Unit (80 hours): • Speaking, Listening and Reading assessed Optional Unit (40 hours): • Writing assessed
Internal Assessment: National Assessment Bank (NAB) • NAB assessment items will be available for the Language Unit and the Optional Units • The NABs indicate the standard of assessments required at this level • NABs can be downloaded by SQA Co-ordinators from the secure area of SQA’s website
Speaking Assessment • Speaking assessed by the centre • Stimulus activities included in NABs • This Speaking Assessment also forms the speaking requirement of the external examination (dual purpose) • The assessment includes: — Prepared presentation (1-2 minutes) — Follow-up discussion (4-5 minutes) • Assessment results are subject to verification by SQA
External Examination Reading • Four passages — three of 75-120 characters and one longer of 350-450 characters. Questions in English — glossary • 1 hour 10 minutes. 30% of the whole examination • Dictionary: Yes • Additional Information: Answer in English
External Assessment Listening • Three items of approximately 60 seconds duration. Questions in English • 30 mins approximately. 20% of the whole examination • Dictionary: No • Additional Information: Each item heard twice. Answers in English
External Assessment Writing • Letter of application for job in a Chinese-speaking country • Task is predictable but candidate needs to apply for the job ad. in the exam • Candidates must include specified details • Exam length: 40 minutes • Candidates can use a dictionary • 20% of the whole examination
