Periodic Table Energy Levels and Electron Placement
Draw the table at the top Column R o w
Use the Atomic Number to figure out • USUALLY the same as protons • Go on ENERGY LEVELS • Places where electrons can be found • As few as 1 • At most 7 • What row it is in tells you how many energy levels Electrons Energy Levels How do you know how many energy levels an atom has?
1st energy level = 2 • 2nd energy level = 8 • 3rd energy level = 8 • 4th energy level = 18 • Once they fill up one energy level they go to the next • YES, if you count how many elements are in each row, it is the same # as how many electrons can fit on the level How many electrons can fit on each level? What order do electrons fit? Is there a pattern?
They are the ones that react with other elements • If the energy level is full, it doesn’t react • Only 8 certain “spots” will react • If the electrons are on the outside energy level AND they are in the spots they are the VALENCE ELECTRONS • Valance Electrons are represented by the first 2 columns and the last 6 columns What is special about the outside electrons Valence electrons
Because He only has 1 energy level and it fills with 2 electrons so it doesn’t react • It doesn’t need 8 but they put in the same column as the others that don’t react • Visual representation of energy levels • Carbon example: C ) 2 ) 4 • The curve is the energy level • The numbers are the electrons Why is He special Bohr Diagram
When you are adding electrons • Just keep adding to that level until it is full. Then make a new level and keep adding • Example: Carbon 6 (6 electrons) 3 The nucleus 1 6 2 The first energy level 4 All Full Second energy level 5 Still room
1 8 2 3 4 5 6 7 How Can I remember? • Just use the periodic table to help. • How many elements are in row 1? 2? 3? How many elements to get to the red dot? 4 2 8 8 18
When you are adding electrons • Just keep adding to that level until it is full. Then make a new level and keep adding • Example: Carbon 6 (6 electrons) 3 The nucleus 1 6 2 The first energy level 4 All Full Second energy level 5 Still room
Just like this list • Only so many electrons can fit on each level. • 1st level can hold 2 • 2nd level can hold 8 • 3rd level can hold 8 • 4th level can hold 18
1 8 2 3 4 5 6 7 Periodic Trends • The numbers at the top of the columns on the periodic table are called Group # • Group # also labels them as Families which means they react similarly. • The Columns below are the ones that hold the Valence Electrons
1 8 2 3 4 5 6 7 B. Periodic Trends • Why is He different? • It only has 2 electrons • 2 makes that level full
1 8 2 3 4 5 6 7 B. Periodic Trends • How many energy levels does this element have?
