When Seconds CountTM… • When Seconds CountTM… is an educational endeavor designed to educate the public, policymakers, and the healthcare community about the critical role that physician anesthesiologists play before, during and after surgery.
When Seconds CountTM… Why Now? • Increased public conversations about physician-led care • States opting out of physician-led anesthesia care requirement • Ongoing risk of elimination of Medicare supervision requirement (national opt-out) • Potential changes in Veterans Affairs policies
Key Research Findings The public and policymakers do not know anesthesiologists are physicians Routine vs. Emergency Procedures Quality, Quality, Quality Credibility: The Power of your Personal Story
Key Messages • Despite advances in medicine, every procedure and surgery has risks. When seconds count, when medical emergencies or other complications occur unexpectedly, physician anesthesiologists draw on their comprehensive medical education, years of clinical training and experience to make critical decisions that can save lives before, during and after surgery.
Key Messages • Nurse anesthetists play a valuable role on the Anesthesia Care Team but cannot replace a physician. Physician anesthesiologists complete nearly double the education and 10 times the clinical training of nurse anesthetists. There is no comparison.
Key Messages • Physician anesthesiologists are dedicated to providing all patients, including our nation’s veterans, with safe, high-quality care and oppose any policies that eliminate physician-led, team-based care and may jeopardize patient safety.
