Biological LoA (3) General Learning Outcomes 1-4
Learning Intentions: • (1) Outline principles that define the biological level of analysis • (2) Explain how principles that define the biological level of analysis may be demonstrated in research (that is, theories and/or studies). • (3) Discuss how and why particular research methods are used at the biological level of analysis (for example, experiments, observations, correlational studies). • (4) Discuss ethical considerations related to research studies at the biological level of analysis. Success Criteria: All students will conduct their own research using laptops during class and come to their own conclusions about the research methods used in this LoA and their ethical considerations. Students will then be required to participate in a class discussion based on this information.
GLO1: 3 Principles (1) Behavior can be innate because it is genetically based (2) Animal research can provide insight into human behavior. (3) There are biological correlates of behavior
Principle 3: Biological Correlates of Behavior • Neurotransmitters • Hormones • Adrenaline, leptin, ghrelin, testosterone, estrogen, melatonin
GLO2: Research on Principles • Explain how principles that define the biological level of analysis may be demonstrated in research (that is, theories and/or studies). • (1) Behavior can be innate because it is genetically based • EX: Twin studies, Adoption studies • (2) Animal research can provide insight into human behavior. • EX: lesioning/ablation of rabbits’ brains • (3) There are biological correlates of behavior • EX: research on specific neurotransmitters & hormones • SSRIs/medication
GLO3: How & why? • Discuss how and why particular research methods are used at the biological level of analysis (for example, experiments, observations, correlational studies). • Experiments • Observations • Correlational Studies • Case Studies • Brain scans (invasive vs. non-invasive techniques) • EEG, PET, fMRI First, consider why we use them in general. Then, reference the basic aim of research in the Biological LoA and come to conclusions about the strengths & weaknesses of these.
GLO4: Ethics (again) • Discuss ethical considerations related to research studies at the biological level of analysis. • What do we need to look out for? • What can we potentially do if we aren’t careful? • Remember ablation and lesioning… • Remember how we can make people ingest things… (researchers, not you). • Is there an issue with coming to conclusions too soon? • Can things go wrong with “new & improved” medications?
