Utilising a Netbook to provide Personalised learning – Interactive Whiteboard 1-1 Netbook program
Agenda for today • 1’ NSSCF and 1:1 Notebook Programs • 2’ Introduction to Interactive WhiteBoard possibilities • 3’ How to use ActivInspire Software in classroom • 4’ Workshop: Plan your own lesson using Interactive Whiteboard (utilise e.g. ActivInspirein your plan)
NSSCF • The National Secondary School Computer Fund (NSSCF/the Fund) is a key component of the Australian Government’s $2.4 billion Digital Education Revolution initiative. • The Fund is assisting schools to provide new computers and other ICT equipment for students in Years 9 to 12 • The Fund is a universal access program and is assisting schools in the public, Catholic and independent education sectors, regardless of location. • The principle objective of the NSSCF was to achieve a 1 to 1 computer to student ratio for all Year 9 to 12 students by 31 December 2011 and this goal was achieved. • more than 911 000 computers have been installed, by the beginning of the 2012 school year (the original target of was 786 000 computers)
NSSCF – 1:1 Programs • Under the Fund, state and territory governments and non-government school systems are responsible for purchasing and delivering the computers in their schools. • Depending on need and preference, schools can purchase netbooks, laptops, tablet computing devices, install more desktop computers or deploy a mix of mobile and stationary devices.
1:1 Program in Victoria • The program will run until 2013 and will be delivered to Victorian government schools with students in Years 9-12 through the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD). • In Victoria the preferred Student Learning Device of Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) is a Netbook up to a maximum cost of $600 each. Should schools wish to purchase device at a cost greater than $600, they have the option of co-contributing funds in order to do so. • a Netbook device may alternatively be referred to as an ultra-mobile personal computer (UMPC), ultra-mobile notebook or mini-notebook and is of a 10-inch form factor weighing less than 1.5kg. • 10,000 Acer Aspire One and Lenovo netbooks distributed to schools in February 2009 (The Netbook Project). Families participating to Project leased a wireless-enabled computer for their child for $52 a year.
1:1 Software: Edustar • Edustaris an image which is placed on over 200,000 computers across 450 schools for years 9-12 in Victoria. It includes over 40 Software programs and is a tremendous resource for teachers and students in improving learner outcomes. • There are currently over 80 software applications available on the eduSTAR software list. The broad range of applications cover: • animation • concept and Mind Mapping • digital video and image creation • drawing and painting • interactive curricular resources • logic and problem-solving • 3D modelling and game-making • presentation and multimedia tools • sound and music making • thinking skills • typing tutors • web authoring tools • writing tools. • http://epotential.education.vic.gov.au/showcase/edustar_win
1:1 Netbook Benefits • Minister for School Education, The Hon Peter Garrett MP: • “The computer rollout is transforming the way students learn, enabling them to work autonomously and develop the skills they need to go on to higher education, into a trade or enter the workforce.” • Netbooks promote better learning in and out of school by encouraging: • anywhere, anytime access to learning • independent, self-initiated learning • more family involvement in education • collaboration between students in different schools, states and other countries.
1:1 Netbook Benefits • The goals of the curriculum are supported, not supplanted, by the use of 1-to-1 devices. • Students will use 1-to-1 devices where they serve a purpose, for instance, in research, data analysis and generating presentations. • Wireless access will allow for ‘just-in-time’ learning where students can search for information or collaborate with others in a real-time context. • Students will be able to use their school files at home and be able to collaborate with their peers on projects through social networking.
101 (and counting…) Classroom Ideas for 1-to-1 Learning • DEECD has collected examples how to use Netbooks effectively in teaching into “eLearning ICT Showcases” website under topic “1-to-1 learning” • http://epotential.education.vic.gov.au/showcase/index.php?showcase_id=62
Redesigning teaching practiceswith a digital pedagogy focus • Standard teaching practice before and now with netbook: • Before: Ask students to keep a journal so that they can reflect on their learning. • Now: Set up a personal blog for each student • Advantage: connect to a local or global audience, students can receive immediate feedback from their teacher and peers – and entries, comments and feedback on the blog can be recorded for use at a later time. • Before: Discussion with students • Now: Online discussion forum • Advantage: Gives students an opportunity for extra ‘think time’. • Now lets’ hear about possibilities with Interactive Whiteboard…
