Cell Membrane & Diffusion • Allows some things into the cell (food and nutrients) as well as other things out of the cell (waste products) • Cell membrane is a barrier through which everything must pass on its way into or out of the cell • The passage of materials occurs through the process of diffusion
Diffusion vs. Osmosis • Diffusion = the movement of molecules from areas where there are higher concentrations to areas where there are lower concentrations. • Osmosis = the movement of water molecules from areas where there are higher concentrations to areas where there are lower concentrations.
Growing Cells • As cells use nutrients, they produce more organelles and get bigger • Problem – need a large enough surface area to work with its volume • It gets to the point where the cell gets too large that it must divide into smaller cells
