O V E R V I E W The Lovely Bones is set in 1973, in a small suburban town where on what 14 year old Susie Salmon thought to be a normal day was walking home from school and decided to take a short cut through a cornfield. This is where a local resident, Mr. Harvey began talking to her. Before she knew it she was in a small underground cave like home that she was most fascinated by, except for the fact that a full grown man makes his way on top of her breathing heavily. This leads her to then be sent to Heaven where she watches over her life from a new perspective as her family tries to undergo her murder mystery. Susie steps in throughout the novel to help her family before they hit a level of insanity.
The Lovely Bones presents literary elements that we are aware of. Such as Imagery, Suspense, Symbolism. • Imagery • Sebold uses imagery to make the book seem more realistic. A vivid example that no one wants to believe or think of is when Susie is raped and murdered. Sebold brings such emotion that it makes the hairs on your arms stand up but by doing this it causes so much more of an effect on the reader. As Susie enters heaven and realizes that her heaven is made up of what she wants rather than a broad matter, it shows the imagery of Heaven v Earth and the difference in life when looking down from above on what used to be your life that you lived. • Suspense • Suspense is incorporated into the novel as well. You are always trying to figure out when they will catch the murder or what is going to happen in the newest love affair, this leads to constant suspense as you read.
Most Sought, Symbolism • Ship in a Bottle • This a symbol most powerful between father and daughter. Before Susie died this is something that Mr. Salmon spent hours doing as him and his daughter talked. Now that is destroyed all because of one man. • The Hat • Susie’s sister had same hat that their mother gave them and it was found after the scene of her murder.
Structure of the Novel • Sebold’s structure with the novel is daring and compelling and makes it one of a kind. The way she uses the history before Susie’s death while explaining how Susie feels in Heaven and the actual murder case going on down on Earth all at once makes the story well rounded and exceptional.
BOOK REVIEW How about a round of applause and a standing ovation for the Lovely Bones. The novel received four stars from Jay and Co for its uniqueness in structure and the emotion brought into the plot as it thickened. Bravo Sebold.
Alice Sebold • Alice Sebold wrote this novel based on the fact that she was once raped as a child. Though she did see life from not Heaven nor was she murdered it put a great twist on the book and made it into a top seller.
THE STORY OF A LIFE AND EVERYTHING THAT CAME AFTER.... The top seller is now being presented on the big screen through DreamWorks this Friday January 15. Though they are not going to be able to put all of the ins and outs of the novel within the 2hr and 15 minutes of air time they will most likely be able to take a different overview and really score big in the box office.
