Potato production under irrigation in Perkerra: Progress Report
Introduction • Potato is the second most important crop after maize in terms of production and consumption. • A cool season crop and grows best between 150 C and 180 C • Soil pH of 5.5 • Min. rainfall: 1000 mm per annum • Altitude: 1500 and 3500 masl
Introduction • Potato, fast maturing, high calories • Increasing pop Increasing food demand • migration to less potential areas. • Limitations: low erratic rainfall (can irrigate) • High temperature (breed for tolerance) • Successful breeding programme: identification of potential parents through screening of the available germplasm is crucial.
Materials and Methods • One season: 6thNovember 2013 to 21st February 2014. • 33 potato genotypes: 12 from CIP and 21 from KARI Tigoni. • From CIP: Advanced clones, heat tolerant. • From Tigoni: Released +farmer varieties.
Materials and Methods • RCBD, 3 replications, • 75cm x 30 cm; 30 plants/ plot (plot size 6.75 m2) • DAP (18%N: 46%P2O5) recommended rates 500 kg ha-1 • Furrow irrigation by gravity when need arose.
Conclusion and Recommendation • Low yield was mainly due to poor stand establishment and low survival rate of the emerged plants. • Study needs to be repeated.
