1. James Irvin Education Center 2013-14 Sem 2A school where ALL students can achieve academic success through active engagement in their learning and lives. Our focus is on Every Student, Every Minute, Every Period, Every Day so that ALL students Believe, Achieve, and Succeed.

2. JIEC Supply List • We purchase all initial supplies. Parents do not need to send anything. In return, we request: • Parents pay fees – these cover your child’s materials • Parents send Boxtops for education • If parents want to contribute to classroom supply fund, donations welcomed. • No backpacks needed or permitted. • Purchase clothes that are in dress code • If students destroy or disrespect supplies, they will need to furnish their own.

3. Who is James Irvin? • Long-term Dade City resident who contributed greatly to the community • Volunteer • Child advocate • Child mentor • Known for honesty and conscientiousness

4. As an alternative school, what role do we play in our students’ education? • We help students learn the skills they need for school, career, and life readiness. This means they must meet grade level expectations academically and socially. • Students CANNOT graduate from James Irvin Education Center. • But they can learn and practice the skills that will help them achieve their goals.

5. 4 Goals for All students • We, like all other schools, share the same four goals for students: • Students make at least one year’s progress in one year • Students are Promoted to the next grade level. • Students earn their High School Diplomas. • Students are able to succeed after high school in any setting: • Job • Additional Training • College

6. To help students meet these goals, we have a very qualified and dedicated staff. • Principal with over 34 years of classroom and administrative experience at high performing schools • Teachers that are Highly qualified and certified for every content area • Guidance Counselor with experience in substance abuse counseling, social work, and academic and vocational planning • Behavior Specialist who a PhD and has a strong background in counseling, behavioral therapy, social work. • School Psychologist who is very involved in helping students academically and behaviorally. • School Social Worker who works with students, parents, and community agencies to improve attendance and connect parents to various school and community supports • School Resource Officer who is dedicated to helping students make positive choices • ICT Coach and Technology Assistant with many varied experiences in everything from computers to sound mixing, recording, video production, exceptional student education, and learning best practices • Literacy Coach who leads our literacy program through data analysis, providing professional development, and modeling best practices. • Instructional Assistants who support teachers and provide extra help to students in the classrooms. • Cafeteria Manager who brings great selections for students on a daily basis and ensures that EVERY student at JIEC has access to a nutritious breakfast and lunch. • Clerical staff who do everything from greeting our parents, community, and visitors to running the clinic, data entry, and bookkeeping. • Plant Manager and custodians who help us maintain a safe and secure learning environment, as well as help with supervision in the cafeteria and courtyards. • Itinerant Student Services Team (School Psychologist, Social Worker, and Nurse) who work with students and parents to help all succeed • Strong District Office support, including supervisors, directors, assistant superintendents, and the superintendent, all dedicated to helping all of us work together so that all students reach their highest potential.

8. What students need to do: • Make the commitment to improve. All of us can learn to be better. • Follow all directions, procedures, and rules. • Be an active participant in setting and achieving goals. • Work hard – one always gets what one puts into something – a lot of effort reaps results. • Be willing to try and apply the lessons to your life. • Be responsible, be respectful, be safe, and be a positive problem solver. • When they make a mistake, admit it and learn from it. • Believe in themselves enough to invest time and commitment to achieving and succeeding.

11. Time and Place • There’s a time and place for everything. • Place: • JIEC = work place for all of us • How we act • How we dress • How we speak • Our goal is to help all students be successful in ALL settings, especially the workplace and their zoned schools.

12. School Rules • Be Respectful. • Be Responsible. • Be Safe. • Be a Positive Problem Solver. • Note: The Secondary Code of Student Conduct, established by the District School Board of Pasco County, states all student rights and responsibilities. This is found in your planner.

13. Lessons learned hereTransfer to Careers! • Dress for Success: In the world of work, people dress more conservatively and in ways that are acceptable to customers, clients, and the general public. Individual styles are for private lives, not the work place. • Respect, Responsibility, Safety, Problem Solving!!! • Follow employer’s guidelines regarding cell phones and electronics. Here that means during breaks, lunches, or when the teacher announces that students may use them. At all other times, they should not be seen or heard. • Do what the boss says; if one disagrees, speak to the boss calmly and professionally by stating the issue and how you would resolve it. This is done with respect.

14. Guidelines to be Successful Anywhere • Dress for Success – A school is a place of employment for everyone here. We need to recognize and respect that. • Dress code needs to be followed. • Leave hats and hoods off unless it’s below 45 degrees. • Wear pants above the hip/rear end level toward the waist. Looking employable is more important than making a statement. • Always look neat and clean. • Wear modest clothing. • Students should not need to be constantly reminded to comply with dress code requirements. School is not the place to make personality or belief fashion statements.

15. Electronics • When students arrive, all electronic devices, cell phones, ipods, mp3 players, headphones, etc. must be silent, invisible, and away for the day. • Students who violate this policy will have their phone confiscated and locked up for the day. It will be returned at the end of the day. • Students who habitually violate the policy are subject to loosing the privilege of possessing any device on campus, or their parents may have to come get the device from the office and meet with school officials. • Remember this poem: • From when I arrive at JIEC • Until leaving promptly at 2:50 • My electronic devices will silent be • And invisible so that none can see • Or else they will be taken from me.

16. Additional Guidelines • Students who are bus riders must ride the bus unless parents notify us by 2:00 that this has changed. • Your pay grade and amount of JIEC dollars saved will determine your privileges. • Keep backpacks at home. • Students are subject to searches, and drug-sniffing dogs do come onto campus. • Attend all classes and stay for the entire period so that no instruction is missed. • Ask for help when needed. • Communicate needs.

17. Course Recovery If you are here for course RECOVERY (mainly second-year 8th Graders) • Expectations include: • Daily attendance • Complete recovery work • Use time wisely • Demonstrate appropriate behaviors • Keep trying, even when the work gets tough. • Earn your high school credits • Recovery students may attend any event open to the public (not in-school events) at their zoned schools. • We provide RECOVERY students with photo ID badges. These show any other school official that the student is permitted to attend events open to the public. If students were not present for pictures, then their names are provided to all feeder principals.

18. Behavioral Placement Students (EXPULSION, Manifestation Meeting, or District Placements) • If you are here for behavior as a result of an expulsion hearing, manifestation meeting, or other discipline placement, you have specific guidelines set for you by the hearing officer. • You must abide by the conditions set and meet all requirements laid out during your hearing in order to remain here and/or return to your zoned school. Common restrictions include: positive behavior, attend, pass classes, be on track for graduation, and be subject to search at any time. • This is a final chance for you. Make it a point to focus yourself on your work and abide by our rules and procedures, even if you don’t like them. • If you do not abide by the specified guidelines, attend regularly, or if you have any Level 2 or 3 offenses, we may recommend that the expulsion recommendation be forwarded to the board. Those over the age of 16 may be withdrawn for non-attendance. • Students placed for behavior may NOT set foot on any other Pasco School Board property or campus. This includes all school sponsored activities. If there is cause for an exception, it must be approved by the principal in advance, and a parent must accompany the student. Important: students who violate this rule will be subject to arrest for trespassing, suspended for 10 days, and recommended for expulsion or alternative placement in a more restrictive setting. 19. JIEC $$$ System - DRAFT • Students earn JIEC dollars in every class for meeting specific expectations. These add up and help students move to higher levels of privileges and responsibilities. • They are earned for following directions, completing work, being in dress code, mastering focus/goal areas, etc. • Four Pay Levels • Senior Management (white) Level: students can earn up to $5.00 per class. • Management (gold) Level: students can earn up to $3.00/class. • Employee (Gray): students can earn up to $2.00/class. • Apprentice (Red) - Entry point: Students earn up to $1.00/class • -Pink Slips: Off the pay scale for a day – begins ledger over when off pink slip

You can be successful. • You have to look at what people who are successful in their jobs do and learn to do the same. • It’s all about helping YOU to learn how do play the school, career, and life game. SEE IT, OWN IT, SOLVE IT, DO IT. Be an above-the-line person. BELIEVE, ACHIEVE, SUCCEED! Your success is up to you. The only limits you have are the ones you place on yourself.
