  2. Yikes! I have a lot of names to learnthissemester! • Seatingwillbe in alphabeticalorderuntil I get to know yournames – I have 95 new studentsthissemester! • Please let me know if you have anyhearing or vision problems and I willhappilyrepositionyou. • Now, get to know yourneighbour; then, beprepared to tell me something about him or her – just a few words on interests, wheretheywent to school last year, etc.

  3. Introductions! I’ll go first: Mynameis Ms. Bancroft and thissemester I amteaching English 9 and French 11. I have been a Riverside teachersince the schoolopened in 1996. I ammarriedwithtwo sons, Nelson and Aidan, and I am a citizen of Canada, Great Britain and France. Wespeakmostly French at home. I enjoyforeign films, painting, yoga, travelling and reading. Now, youintroduceyourneighbour….

You willneed to bring to class: • Yourpersonaldevice and charger • Perhaps a Hilroy-type notebook (32 pages) • A blue or black pen for writing tests • A redpen for markingquizzes • AND a positive attitude, respect, energy, ideas, creativity, kindness, wit, and … anyhomework as well as a book to read!

  5. One class rule: Do what’s right. • How? Just think…RESPECT • For others • For learning • For yourself • Be thankfuleverydaythatyou are herelearningwithyourpeers and not hereinstead. • Coming to thisschooleachdaymakes YOU one of the mostprivileged kids in the world. Be thankful for thisprivilege and do your best.

  7. Improvingyour English • Increasingyourvocabulary • Understanding the differences in written and oral forms of the language • Learning how to writewith a purpose • Learning to be a strongerreader – for pleasure and for information

Enjoying English • Reading for pleasure – the librarianwill help youchoosematerialthatinterestsyou and thatisatyourreadinglevel. • Writing for pleasure – not everyonewillbe a poet or a writer, but if wecanimproveyourwritingskills, you’llfeel more confident in writing… essays, office memos, love letters (!), toasts to the bride and yes, evenpoems. 

  19. Enjoying English • Accents, dialects, idioms, and images: • Blimey, a nod’s as good as a wink to a blind ‘orse, nudge-nudge, wink-wink, say no more, say no more! • G’day, mate! Seeyalater, alligator! • It’sraining cats and dogs • Somewhere over the rainbow… • And, especially, favouritewords… mellifluous, serendipity, balmy, pie, baby’sbreath, dumpling, lascivious, bumbershoot….

Appreciating English • Enjoyingitspeculiarities • A row of desks… a lovers’ row… to row a boat • The treebough… a roughday… through the gate… although…. • Understandingitsevolution • Thou art more beautiful… ‘Twas the night before Christmas… Yes, ma’am… Yo, dude! • Understanding the skill and art of poets, novelists, playwrights, and screenwriters.

  21. My #1 expectation: Do what’s right. My#1 hope: That yougrowintocaring, happy adults.
