  1. Carboxyl Group AKA - Carboxylic Acids

  2. 1. Structure • Combination of a hydroxyl and a carbonyl group • Oxygen double bonded to a carbon which is also bonded to a hydroxyl group and the hydrocarbon (R)

  3. 2. Naming • Carboxylate anion is named with -ate. • The carboxylic acids end with -oic. • The International Union of Pure & Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) allows both the use of common names and the systematic names. • Determine the number of carbons in the longest chain and use the prefix. • Replace the alkane suffix with -oic and the word acid afterwards. • Number chains with branches so that the carboxyl group is the first carbon.

  4. 3. Properties • Acidic • Water Soluble • Unpleasant Odor • Forms Metallic Salts in Acid/Base Reactions • Bronsted-Lowry Acids

  5. 4. Five Uses • Vinegar • Tart Flavoring • Skin Care Products • Ant-Sting Toxin • Production of Soaps & Detergents • Phermones • Stinky Feet Odor • Citric Acid

  6. 5. Three Examples • Acetic Acid • Formic Acid • Citric Acid • Salicyclic Acid

  7. 6. How Produced • Side group oxidation alkylbenzenes • Alkyl side chain or aromatic ring converts to a carboxyl group by reacting with strong oxidizers • Oxidation of aldehydes • Oxidation of primary alcohols
