Bad Axe Throwing, an axe-throwing chain from Canada, said it will open a new location at 845 E. 73rd Ave. in Denver on Aug. 11. The concept is pretty simple: Your group brings its own beer and food, learns how to throw an axe from an instructor, and axes begin to fly. The company operates nine Canadian locations, as well as one in Chicago and one in Indianapolis. Why Denver? "We chose Denver because the majority of the events we have are corporate. The early adopters of Bad Axe Throwing are in fact tech companies because they already offer great perks to their employees and have a lot of fun events. We're that perfect fit for them. ... We think the people of Denver will love the thrill of axe throwing," said a Bad Axe Throwing spokesperson. The company said private events and bookings cost between $35-$44.25 plus tax per person. Is it dangerous? "We have never had anyone hurt or injured in any way. It is completely safe and we are very strict in making sure that everyone is throwing the axes in a safe manner," the company says on its website, adding that you can't bring your own axes "due to our insurance policies." Mario Zelaya is founder of Bad Axe Throwing and said that Denver should get ready for some competitive axe throwing. "We're a part of The World Axe Throwing League (WATL) - which means along bringing urban axe throwing to Denver, we'll be bringing along the competitive league side as well. That means that folks in Denver can sign up to the WATL and compete at a global level." Last year, prior to the opening of the Chicago axe-throwing location, Zelaya told the Chicago Tribune that axe throwing is the "modern-day bowling. Like darts, but on steroids."
