  1. June 3, 2011 UW-Stout STAR II Team Kevin Mason, School of Education Angela Krause-Kuchta, Menomonie High School Dennis Weibel, Biology Department Forrest Schultz, Chemistry Department Nelu Ghenciu, Math Department Wisconsin Grassroots Teacher Quality Assessment Project

  2. Student Teacher Assessment of Content Knowledge (STACK) Pilot Test • Student Teacher: Sonya Arendt • Subject: 9th Grade Physical Science • Supervisor: Kevin Mason • Methodology: Videotaped a physical science lesson. The lesson was observed in person by the supervisor. The videotape was observed by three other observers: Dennis Weibel (Biology), Forrest Schultz (Chemistry), and Nelu Ghenciu (Math). Data was collected for inter-rater reliability.

  3. Inter-Rater Reliability:Content Knowledge (Items A-D)

  4. Inter-Rater Reliability: Pedagogical Content Knowledge (Items E-H)

  5. Inter-Rater Reliability: Pedagogical Content Knowledge (Items I-L)

  6. Comments • “Missing the answer row for D” • “Liked the overall flow of the form.” • “This version of the STACK form was much easier to use.” • “It was not clear at times on how to separate out classroom management items in regards to elements on [the] form.” • “In this lesson, teacher reviewed test – used a significant amount of time – so I saw content, but difficult to evaluate. Would be easier if it were one entire lesson on a single piece of content.” • “The STACK observation form should only be used to observe lessons where a significant amount of content is being introduced in the lesson…The supervisor will need to carefully select the appropriate observation tool for the lesson.”

  7. Implementation and Future Steps • Modify the STACK instrument for “STMED” courses at UW-Stout (funded by a UWSA TQI Grant). • Introduce STACK instrument in STMED 101 Intro. • Use STACK instrument for self and peer evaluation of microteaching in STMED 460 Methods. • Use STACK instrument during student teacher observations for lessons that present content.
