UPDATE Consideration of views Review of policy options New submission Feb 2008 Clearance now received to include (England only) • Waters designated under the Freshwater Fish Directive • Waters in RAMSAR sites that are not also Natura 2000 sites • SSSIs noted for their aquatic interest (+ refinement to delineation of drinking water protected areas and canals + inclusion of missing GQA river reaches)

HEADLINE CHANGES TO WATER BODIES • 40% of the river network in England within a water body (from 32%, an increase of ~ 10,000 km) • waters in 3 RAMSAR sites (Pevensey Levels, Rostherne Mere and Midland Meres and Mosses) to be added • omitted FWFD lakes to be added (an extra 1.76 km in surface area) • waters in ~ 170 additional SSSIs to be included (lakes, saline lagoons and drainage channels (canals already included))

IMPLICATIONS Additional water bodies to be considered in the 1st RBMP For additional FWFD, RAMSAR and SSSI water bodies: Subject to measures associated with existing international and domestic obligations and initiatives (SSSI ‘favourable condition’ is likely to meet the full requirements of ‘good ecological status’) POMs to be determined and subject to IA

  7. CONTINUING REVIEW OF WATER BODIES EA will continue to refine the delineation of water bodies Periodic reviews of the significance of waters May lead to the identification of additional water bodies in future RBMPs
