The Keys to Chemistry:Interactive Web-Based Gen Chem Tutorials Anita J. Brandolini Department of Chemistry & Geology Fairleigh Dickinson University Madison, New Jersey 07940 Email: anita_brandolini@fdu.edu
Goals • Produce a series of interactive Web-based tutorials for general chemistry • Generate supplementary material, not a textbook substitute • Maintain a light-hearted, supportive tone to engage student interest • Incorporate interactive elements (drag-and-drops, animations, puzzles, games)
More goals • Make modules independent, but use links to connect related topics • Acknowledge problems and confusion to minimize frustration • Give helpful feedback for incorrect answers • Provide practice problems, but avoid time constraints and grading
Audiences • Undergraduate chemistry students (both science majors and nonmajors) • High-school chemistry students • Younger students with an interest in chemistry • Advanced students who want review material
PORTAL ORGANIC EQUILIBRIUM THERMODYNAMICS CHEMICAL REACTIONS ACIDS & BASES BASICS ATOMIC STRUCTURE & BONDING SOLIDS, LIQUIDS, & GASES Structure
Some interactive elements • Periodic Table Puzzle • Spellement – element symbols • Word Searches • Crosswords • Jokes and cartoons • Fun links • Pop-up calculator and Periodic Table
Tools & resources • Dreamweaver MX for basic web-page development • Course Builder extension to Dreamweaver for interactive elements • Adobe Image Ready for animations • JavaScripts and GIF animations from public sources • Mark Nandor’s Exhaustive Chemical Words Pages
Temporary home Summer 2006: http://arrhenius.rider.edu/brandolini/ keys/portal/portal_home.htm • Will re-direct in September
Future plans • Continue development of modules • Incorporate more games, puzzles, and videos • Seek funding to allow faster development • Consider ways to make tutorials helpful to diverse student populations • Begin development of organic-chemistry tutorials
