  3. Consider The death penalty is a warning, just like a lighthouse throwing its beams out to sea. We hear about shipwrecks, but we do not hear about the ships the lighthouse guides safely on their way. We do not have proof of the number of ships it saves, but we do not tear the lighthouse down. - poet Hyman Barshay

Task • Your group will be participating in a debate over the death penalty. • Today you will be reading documents and taking notes over important details and facts. • Categorize your notes (for/against) • You will need citations for your debate. • One person can read the document while the other group members take notes; take turns. • Consider as you read: • Effect on society (financial & safety) • Effect on the victim’s family • Effect on the accused
