Background • Science & Technology Advisory Group (STAG) recommendation 8 years ago: Taiwan should have at least one research university of world-class status. • Excellence Projects • University Integration Program • World-Class University Initiative • Appropriation: 1.67 billion USD over 5 years • Merger of NTHU/NCTU: 500 million USD over 5 years • Recruitment of F. Shu by NTHU – 1 Feb 2002 • California Campus → Center for Advanced Research (CAR) • Deep collaboration with UCB, Tsinghua – Dual PhD program • Discussions with Campbell, Kuh, Newton, Richards • Visit with Y. T. Lee to see Chancellor Berdahl & VCP Gray: focus on Richmond Field Station – nano/info/bio • Mirror site at Jhudong
Possible Funding Sources • Part of NTHU/NCTU Merger Proposal • Funding pending Legislative approval • Need to pass university senates • Overseas Studies Program • Already funded at 13.5 million USD next year • NTHU will submit proposal (4.5 million USD?) to support PhD students/postdocs in UCB collaboration • Special Program • Not yet funded, but has MOE/NSC/MOEA support • Will probably need to involve all research universities • Academia Sinica Funding • Possible 15 million USD per year for NTHU/NCTU collaboration • Available when needed
