1. BRAG Bringing
Re-entries and
ATB students to
Graduation
2. B.R.A.G. is… A program that targets efforts and resources toward our two highest risk groups:
1. Re-entries
2. ATB students
3. Why are these the two highest risk groups? ATB students drop at a higher rate than the non-ATB population
Half of Re-enters drop again.
4. Relative Comparison of ATB population with non-ATB population by gross drop rate
5. Half of our 2007 Re-enters dropped again
6. The other reason they deserve attention Not only are they the two highest drop rate segments of our population, they are also…
THE TWO FASTEST GROWING SEGMENTS OF OUR POPULATION!
7. Growth rate of ATB pop in 2007 in 4 select schools
8. Growth of Re-enters in 4 select schools in 2007
9. The Dilemma: Our two highest drop rate groups are also our two fastest growing groups.
Retention will continue to be a challenge for us unless we target these two groups specifically.
10. Other Reasons these Two Groups are the same These students have the same pattern of quitting
These students are the first to become overwhelmed
When they are absent it is because they are overwhelmed, not because they do not see value (like the rest of the student body)
These students need life skills training including how to set goals, and how to make back-up plans
11. What we know about keeping these two groups of students and bringing them to graduation: They graduate when they had one consistent person that they could count on throughout the length of their program.
They graduate when we advise them immediately after starting school.
They graduate when their advising has been meaningful to them.
They graduate when their advising has been consistent.
They graduate when we teach them about goal setting and making back up plans.
12. 2 Basic Elements of the BRAG program Pacific Institute program
Advising
13. In the first 10 weeks: Every Re-enter and ATB student will complete Pacific Institute “Thought Patterns for a Successful Career”
14. Why do they need it the most? Quitting is a pattern for them that they have to break.
Their habits and attitudes are not geared toward completing anything.
No one has ever taught them how to set goals.
No one has ever taught them about back up plans.
15. Advising in coordination with PI Each school has a group of advisors, with a ratio of about 1:25 students each.
Each of these advisors are trained and “BRAG Certified”
To keep the Certification, they must meet minimum advising session guidelines that will be inspected quarterly.
16. B.R.A.G. Advising in a nutshell Every ATB student and Re-enter will receive BRAG advising within the first three days of school.
Every ATB and Re-enter will have the same BRAG Advisor until they graduate.
We will track graduation rates of BRAG Advisors’ students and reward bonuses based on meeting certain rates.
17. How We Will Measure Success On a quarterly basis, retention of the ATB population will equal the retention of the non-ATB population.
The graduation rate of ATB students will be the same as the graduation rate of the total population.
Only one quarter of re-enters will drop again.
